World and Activities

The world of Grand Theft Auto V combines the urban sprawl of Los Santos with the much larger rural region of Blaine County. The playable area was designed on a huge scale, with Rockstar describing it as larger than the maps of Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV put together. According to art director Aaron Garbut, the three earlier worlds could fit within the boundaries of GTA V's map.

The Geography of San Andreas

GTA V's version of San Andreas takes inspiration from Southern California. Los Santos draws heavily from Los Angeles, while the surrounding countryside stretches through deserts, farmland, forests, mountains, small communities, and coastal areas. The Pacific Ocean is also part of the playable environment, including a detailed underwater landscape.

Several distinct regions give the map its variety. Sandy Shores is located in the Grand Senora Desert, while Mount Chiliad dominates the northern landscape. Fort Zancudo serves as a heavily guarded military installation, and the coastline contains beaches, harbors, piers, and underwater locations. Within Los Santos, areas such as Rockford Hills, Vinewood Hills, Del Perro, Davis, Morningwood, and East Los Santos each have their own visual character.

Major landmarks include the Maze Bank Tower and Los Santos International Airport. Unlike some earlier Grand Theft Auto games, GTA V presents its world as one connected landmass, and the map does not require players to unlock entire regions before exploring them.

How Rockstar Created the Map

Work on the world of GTA V began around 2008, close to the launch period of Grand Theft Auto IV. More than 1,000 developers from Rockstar's studios eventually contributed to the project, with constructing the open world becoming one of the largest technical and artistic challenges of development.

Rockstar's world-building teams researched California directly. Members of the development staff travelled through different parts of the state, collecting photographs and video references that could later be used to recreate landscapes, roads, buildings, and neighborhoods. The team also used map projections of Los Angeles when planning the street layout of Los Santos.

Research went beyond geography. Developers examined demographic and census information and studied documentaries about Southern California. This helped Rockstar create neighborhoods that differed not only in appearance but also in population, architecture, traffic, and everyday activity.

Small Details That Bring Los Santos to Life

The open world is filled with small interactions designed to make the city appear active even when the player is not involved in a mission. Pedestrians can appear in different parts of the map according to their routines. For example, people seen waiting at bus stops in East Los Santos may later appear working around properties in wealthier parts of the city.

Daily routines also affect the environment. Sprinklers can turn on in residential areas such as Morningwood, delivery vehicles emerge from narrow streets, emergency services respond to incidents, and ordinary cars enter and leave driveways. These details help create the impression that Los Santos continues operating independently of the player's actions.

Random events can occur while travelling through the city or countryside, creating unexpected encounters away from the main storyline. Even simple actions can receive location-specific reactions, including how pedestrians respond when the player insults them from a vehicle.

Sports, Hobbies and Other Activities

There is considerably more to do in GTA V than completing the main missions. Rockstar filled the map with optional activities that allow players to spend time exploring, competing, earning money, or simply experimenting with the environment.

  • Sports: tennis, golf, darts, yoga, and triathlon events.
  • Racing: street races, off-road competitions, and boat races.
  • Flying: flight school, parachuting, and stunt-plane time trials.
  • Outdoor activities: hunting, shooting ranges, scuba diving, and BASE jumping.
  • Side work: bail bond missions and weapons transportation by land and air.
  • Entertainment: jet skiing, cinemas, and strip clubs.

Some activities were expanded in the enhanced versions released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Michael can take part in a series of murder investigations, while Franklin receives a wildlife photography challenge. Additional photography activities involving a monkey mosaic can also unlock special rewards, including outfits and the Go Go Monkey Blista.

Vehicles Across the Open World

Vehicles are one of the central elements of GTA V's open-world design. The game includes a larger selection of vehicles than previous entries in the series, with everything from ordinary cars and motorcycles to high-performance supercars.

Players can travel through San Andreas using cars, motorcycles, aircraft, helicopters, boats, jet skis, and submarines. The submarine is particularly useful for exploring the Pacific Ocean and discovering locations beneath the surface. The Rhino tank also returns, featuring an updated aiming system compared with earlier games.

Vehicle physics provide another layer of interaction. Damaged or overturned cars can sometimes be pushed or rolled back onto their wheels, while different vehicles handle differently depending on their size and purpose. Cars can also be modified with performance upgrades and cosmetic changes. Enhanced editions introduced additional customization options such as underglow lighting and more detailed vehicle interiors with functional dashboard displays.

Radio Stations and Music

Music plays an important role in the atmosphere of Los Santos. The original release features more than 241 licensed songs spread across fifteen music stations, alongside two talk-radio channels. The enhanced versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC added another 162 tracks.

The soundtrack combines licensed music with material created specifically for the game. One example is Flying Lotus, who produced original material for FlyLo FM, the station he hosts. GTA V's original score was created by a group of composers that included Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson, The Alchemist, and Oh No. Their work was developed over several years and changes according to the action taking place in the game.

Money, Properties and Progression

Money is another important part of GTA V's open-world systems. Players can purchase properties, including garages and businesses, which provide additional functionality and opportunities. The game also includes an in-game internet system that connects to a stock market, giving players another way to interact with the economy.

Some familiar features from previous games were changed. Fast-food restaurants do not work as a traditional food source in the same way they did in earlier entries. Instead, players can purchase drinks from vending machines and use other methods to manage their character's needs.

Combined with its large map, diverse vehicles, side activities, businesses, random encounters, music, and environmental details, these systems make San Andreas more than a backdrop for the main storyline. Los Santos and Blaine County are designed as a connected open world where exploration itself is a major part of the GTA V experience.
