Version History

Grand Theft Auto V has been released in five waves between 2013 and 2025, and the PC Enhanced upgrade on 4 March 2025 is the most recent. Rockstar announced the game on 25 October 2011, and the first trailer followed on 2 November 2011.

The original target was spring 2013, and Rockstar moved the date to 17 September to allow more polish. Japan received the original release on 10 October 2013. The PC version was announced for the same day as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, then delayed to April 2015 because Rockstar wanted extra development time.

What the 2014 re-release added

The PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC version added a first-person view on foot, a longer draw distance, finer textures, denser traffic, upgraded weather, and new wildlife and vegetation. The PC version supports 60 frames per second at 4K resolution and includes the Rockstar Editor, which captures and edits gameplay video.

Enhanced versus Legacy on PC

The 2025 upgrade came at no cost to existing PC owners, and Rockstar kept the previous version available as GTA V Legacy for PCs that cannot meet the new specs. The Enhanced version adds ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections, support for NVIDIA DLSS 3 and AMD FSR 3, faster loading through DirectStorage, DualSense adaptive triggers and Dolby Atmos audio. It runs from a separate executable. Progress can be copied once from Legacy to Enhanced, but it cannot be copied back, and Legacy and Enhanced players are split into separate multiplayer sessions with no crossplay. The 2022 expanded release

The version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S was announced in June 2020 and launched on 15 March 2022. It brought technical enhancements and performance updates. Reviewers praised sharper visuals and faster loading but found the core gameplay, story and character models dated.

Sales and recognition

The game earned $800 million on its first day and $1 billion in three days, which made it the fastest-selling entertainment product in history, and it broke seven Guinness World Records on 8 October 2013. It reached 150 million shipped copies by July 2021 and over 230 million by June 2026, with nearly $10 billion in revenue by May 2025. Metacritic scores 97 for the PlayStation 3 version.
