Story and Endings

The world of Grand Theft Auto V combines the urban sprawl of Los Santos with the rural landscape of Blaine County and the surrounding Pacific Ocean. Rockstar designed the map to be exceptionally large for the series, with city streets, mountain roads, deserts, farmland and remote wilderness all connected within one continuous world. Art director Aaron Garbut said the maps from Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto IV could collectively fit inside the GTA V environment.

San Andreas and the GTA V map

The game's setting is a fictional version of Southern California. Los Santos takes inspiration from Los Angeles, while the surrounding countryside represents a mixture of desert, agricultural land, mountains and smaller communities. The playable area also extends into the ocean, where the seabed contains wrecks, coral formations and other underwater details.

Major locations include Mount Chiliad, the Grand Senora Desert, Fort Zancudo military base and the town of Sandy Shores. Within Los Santos, the map contains districts such as Rockford Hills, Vinewood Hills, Del Perro, Davis, Morningwood and East Los Santos. Recognisable landmarks include the Maze Bank Tower and Los Santos International Airport.

The entire map forms one connected landmass. Unlike some earlier GTA games, the world is not gradually divided into major areas that must be unlocked before they can be visited. Players can travel between the city, countryside and mountains from the beginning.

How Rockstar created the world

Rockstar North began developing GTA V around 2008, shortly after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV. More than 1,000 people from different Rockstar studios eventually contributed to production, with building the open world becoming one of the project's largest technical and artistic challenges.

The development team researched Southern California directly. Members of the world-building team travelled through the region to take photographs and record video that could be used as visual references. The developers also examined digital maps of Los Angeles when planning Los Santos and its network of roads, highways and neighbourhoods.

Research went beyond the physical landscape. Census information, documentaries and other reference material helped Rockstar create different communities and neighbourhoods with their own visual characteristics. The result is a world where wealthy districts, industrial areas, residential streets and remote settlements feel noticeably different from one another.

A world that changes around the player

Much of GTA V's atmosphere comes from small events that happen without being directly connected to the main missions. Pedestrians have routines, vehicles enter and leave properties, delivery vans appear in side streets and emergency services can be seen responding to incidents.

Some details are tied to particular neighbourhoods. People who appear at bus stops in East Los Santos can later be encountered working in the gardens of expensive homes in Rockford Hills. Sprinklers activate in wealthy residential areas during the morning, while traffic and pedestrian activity change as the player moves around the city.

Random encounters can also occur while travelling. Even simple interactions can produce different reactions depending on where they happen. For example, insulting another driver can lead to different responses from NPCs, adding another layer of unpredictability to normal exploration.

Activities outside the main story

The map is designed for much more than missions and robberies. GTA V gives each protagonist access to a wide range of optional activities, allowing players to spend time exploring or competing instead of following the main storyline.

Sports and recreation

  • Tennis matches around Los Santos.
  • Golf at the city's golf course.
  • Darts as a casual competitive activity.
  • Yoga sessions connected with Michael's storyline.
  • Triathlon events combining swimming, cycling and running.

Racing and outdoor activities

  • Street races through Los Santos.
  • Off-road competitions across rough terrain.
  • Boat and sea races.
  • Flight school challenges.
  • Parachute jumps.
  • Stunt-plane time trials.

The original release treated some flying and stunt activities as special or collector's edition content, while the enhanced versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC made the related activities fully available.

Other optional activities

  • Bail bond work.
  • Hunting.
  • Shooting range challenges.
  • Air and ground arms trafficking.
  • Scuba diving.
  • BASE jumping.
  • Jet skiing.
  • Cinemas and strip clubs.

Extra content in the enhanced versions

The PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC editions added several activities that were not part of the original console release. Michael can investigate a series of murder cases, with the missions unlocking additional noir-style filters for the phone camera.

Franklin can also take part in a wildlife photography challenge. Completing it unlocks the Kraken submarine. Another photography activity involves finding a series of monkey mosaics, rewarding the player with monkey-themed outfits and the Go Go Monkey Blista.

Vehicles and exploration

Vehicles are central to GTA V's open world, with the game offering one of the largest collections in the series at the time of release. The selection covers ordinary cars, sports cars, motorcycles, aircraft and watercraft, allowing players to explore the environment in very different ways.

Planes and helicopters provide access to the map from above, while jet skis and boats can be used around the coastline. A submarine allows the player to descend below the surface and explore the Pacific Ocean floor. The Rhino tank also returns, featuring an updated aiming system.

Vehicle physics create additional possibilities during exploration. Cars can roll over and, in many situations, be pushed back onto their wheels. Vehicles can also be modified with performance and cosmetic upgrades. The enhanced editions introduced additional customisation options such as underglow lighting and more detailed vehicle interiors with functional dashboard displays.

Radio stations and music

Music plays a major role in the atmosphere of Los Santos. Rockstar licensed more than 241 songs for the original version, distributed across fifteen music stations, alongside two talk-radio stations. The enhanced editions added another 162 tracks.

The soundtrack combines licensed music with material created specifically for the game. Flying Lotus produced original music for FlyLo FM, the radio station he hosts. The game's original score was created by a group that included Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson, The Alchemist and Oh No. Their work was developed over several years and is used throughout missions and other parts of the game.

Money, properties and progression

Exploration also connects with GTA V's economic systems. Players can purchase certain properties, including garages and businesses, which provide additional opportunities to earn money. The in-game internet expands this system further by giving players access to a stock market where money can be invested.

The game handles food differently from some previous entries in the series. Fast-food restaurants do not provide the same direct eating mechanic found in earlier GTA titles, while vending machines can be used to purchase drinks.

Tip: GTA V's map is most rewarding when explored beyond the main missions. Mountains, underwater areas, rural roads, side activities and random encounters provide many reasons to keep travelling around San Andreas after the story sends you somewhere else.
